New Forum

To the right of this post is a link to the new Douglas County Community Forum.  For those who are tired of weeding through the arguments on the Douglasville Topix forum, this will be the perfect alternative for you.  Membership is not required, like the topix message board, but unlike topix, there will be a moderator: me (and possibly other people if it gets very busy).  I’ll only remove posts if they’re attacking another person or if they’re using extreme obscenities.  There’s forums for every community (if I haven’t added your community or know of one I need to add, post a reply to this post) and to talk about local events and politics and crime.  There’s even a forum to post classifieds.  Have fun!

Douglasville Couple To Be On MTV

MTV to air ‘Engaged & Underage: Live! Wedding Special on August 2

By Christopher Rocchio, 07/29/2008

MTV has announced it will air Engaged & Underage: Live! on Saturday, August 2 at 5PM ET/PT.

The one-hour special will follow 18-year-old Nikki Bryant and 19-year-old Josh Turner as they tie the knot in Times Square in front of a live television audience.

The Douglasville, GA couple met at their Baptist church when they were 14-years-old and have been dating ever since.  After graduating high school, Josh joined the Army National Guard while Nikki finished her senior year.  However only days after Nikki’s graduation, the couple learned Josh would be deployed to Afghanistan in 2009.

The couple is determined to spend a year together in wedded bliss before Josh’s deployment, hence the trip down the aisle while they’re still teenagers.  But it won’t be that simple, as Nikki’s father expressed concerns about their age, finding a place to live, financial worries and Josh’s eventual deployment.

In addition, MTV announced four classic half-hour Engaged & Underage episodes will serve as the lead-in for the August 2 special, which will also update viewers on the progress being made by some of the young couples who previously appeared on the show.

Commuter Rail??

Found this after posting the press release about ConMed.

It’s a sales listing for the Cotton Mill on Hwy 78.  At the end of the description it says that “the area across the street has been identified as a possible commuter rail station for Georgia’s proposed commuter rail system.”  It goes on to say this area is pedestrian friendly.  The mill could be renovated and turned into an upscale shopping center.  The listing says it would be a good location for lofts.  However, this location is not near the mall, and most of the new businesses lately have located either on Hwy 5 or near the mall.  If Douglasville concentrated on the historic area more, maybe holding more events that would bring the community to the historic district, maybe this mill could be sold as an upscale shopping center.  Perhaps have weekly concerts in the plaza like Marietta Square does, or hold a weekly farmer’s market in the plaza.

And in searching for a proposed commuter rail program for Douglas County, I found this EXTREMELY outdated page on the GA DOT website–

http://www.dot.state.ga.us/localgovernment/intermodalprograms/Pages/CommuterRail.aspx

that says Douglas County was supposed to have commuter rail service EIGHT years ago.  You read this right.  Douglas County was part of the “phase one” of the commuter rail lines.  Our part of the line was supposed to start in Atlanta and go all the way to Bremen.  Obviously it was not approved–but why is it still on the website??  According to a June 12 article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the only commuter rail currently in the planning stages is one from the downtown area to Griffin and the city of Athens is pushing for one from Atlanta to Athens.

I also found this website– http://www.garail.com/ – but it hasn’t been updated in two years.  But this website– http://www.getgeorgiamoving.com/ – looks like it would be a good source of information.

ConMed Leases 157,000 Square Feet In Lithia Springs

ConMed Leases 157,000 SF in Lithia Springs

First Industrial Inks Deal at First Park Terminus West

First Industrial Realty Trust, Inc. leased 157,200 square feet to surgical products manufacturer ConMed Corp. at 1250 Terminus Drive in Lithia Springs, GA. The property is part of First Industrial’s First Park Terminus West industrial park.

The 330,000-square-foot distribution center delivered in fourth quarter 2007 in the I-20 West/Douglasville Industrial submarket. The remaining 172,800 square feet remains available.

Todd Barton and Greg Haynes of CB Richard Ellis handled the transaction. “The overall interest level in First Park Terminus West has been very high,” said Barton. “We believe that the proximity to the Norfolk Southern intermodal yard, two Interstate 20 interchanges and excellent construction specifications have fueled much of the activity.”

First Industrial Realty Trust is a Chicago-based industrial REIT with more than 9 million square feet in its Atlanta portfolio and more than 100 million square feet internationally.

Teenager Accused In Death Of Son

Man, 18, accused in death of child
By Bobby Moore
Staff Writer

Alonzo Toler, 18, of Douglasville has been arrested by the Douglasville Police Department and accused in the death of his 2-month-old son, which medical officials said was caused by head trauma.

Police were notified around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday by WellStar Douglas hospital employees that a child brought in by an ambulance was suffering from a fractured skull and had to be put on a ventilator, officials said.

The child was life-flighted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, where he passed away later that night.

Chief Joe Whisenant said Toler eventually admitted to investigators from the Major Case Unit that he had punched the child and threw him to the floor. Motives for the alleged abuse are still under investigation, Whisenant added.

The Major Case Unit is a cooperative effort between four investigators from the police department and four investigators from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office who combine their efforts and resources to solve major crimes.

According to Whisenant, Toler had picked up the child late Tuesday night from the mother’s home in Riverdale.

Whisenant added there is a 17-hour window between the time Toler picked up the child and when the child arrived at WellStar in which the suspected abuse likely occurred.

Toler also admitted he became concerned Wednesday afternoon when the child was not eating or showing any signs of response, Whisenant said.

When Toler visited a female neighbor at Twin Creeks apartments to ask her if the baby was sick, she immediately insisted he call 911, Whisenant said.

Whisenant added that Toler has been cooperating with investigators and has shown them the scene of the alleged crime.

12pm follow-up–WXIA says Toler appeared in Douglas County Court this morning where the judge denied bond.  McDade says they are still unsure as to his age–he might be 17, he might be 18–so he might or might not be charged as an adult.
