Commuter Rail?? July 26, 2008

It’s a sales listing for the Cotton Mill on Hwy 78. At the end of the description it says that “the area across the street has been identified as a possible commuter rail station for Georgia’s proposed commuter rail system.” It goes on to say this area is pedestrian friendly. The mill could be renovated and turned into an upscale shopping center. The listing says it would be a good location for lofts. However, this location is not near the mall, and most of the new businesses lately have located either on Hwy 5 or near the mall. If Douglasville concentrated on the historic area more, maybe holding more events that would bring the community to the historic district, maybe this mill could be sold as an upscale shopping center. Perhaps have weekly concerts in the plaza like Marietta Square does, or hold a weekly farmer’s market in the plaza.
And in searching for a proposed commuter rail program for Douglas County, I found this EXTREMELY outdated page on the GA DOT website–
http://www.dot.state.ga.us/localgovernment/intermodalprograms/Pages/CommuterRail.aspx
that says Douglas County was supposed to have commuter rail service EIGHT years ago. You read this right. Douglas County was part of the “phase one” of the commuter rail lines. Our part of the line was supposed to start in Atlanta and go all the way to Bremen. Obviously it was not approved–but why is it still on the website?? According to a June 12 article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the only commuter rail currently in the planning stages is one from the downtown area to Griffin and the city of Athens is pushing for one from Atlanta to Athens.
I also found this website– http://www.garail.com/ – but it hasn’t been updated in two years. But this website– http://www.getgeorgiamoving.com/ – looks like it would be a good source of information.

ConMed Leases 157,000 SF in Lithia Springs
First Industrial Inks Deal at First Park Terminus West
First Industrial Realty Trust, Inc. leased 157,200 square feet to surgical products manufacturer ConMed Corp. at 1250 Terminus Drive in Lithia Springs, GA. The property is part of First Industrial’s First Park Terminus West industrial park.
The 330,000-square-foot distribution center delivered in fourth quarter 2007 in the I-20 West/Douglasville Industrial submarket. The remaining 172,800 square feet remains available.
Todd Barton and Greg Haynes of CB Richard Ellis handled the transaction. “The overall interest level in First Park Terminus West has been very high,” said Barton. “We believe that the proximity to the Norfolk Southern intermodal yard, two Interstate 20 interchanges and excellent construction specifications have fueled much of the activity.”
First Industrial Realty Trust is a Chicago-based industrial REIT with more than 9 million square feet in its Atlanta portfolio and more than 100 million square feet internationally.
