Yellowjackets At Clinton Nature Preserve

Specifically, at the white house.  There was some sort of gathering in the house around noon, and after they left, I went up to the house, intending to sit on the swing on the porch, but then noticed a corner of the porch had been roped off by what looked like shoelaces.  A few of the porch railings (underneath the main railing) had been broken out and a spray can of pesticide sat on the top railing of the porch.  Then I saw a yellowjacket.  There was no sign on the porch indicating that there were yellowjackets on the porch, but there was a sign on the front door that notified parents of a different location of where to drop or pick up kids from summer camp.  It, however, made no mention of yellowjackets.  When there was an infestation near the amphitheatre, signs in the effected area were posted.

Also, for those of you who are regulars at the park…what are they doing with the heavy industrial equipment?  I noticed they were trying to even the road out but also noticed a pile of dirt, I think, over near the remains of the log cabin across from the gravel parking lot.

Whitley Denied Bond

From myfoxatlanta.com:

A convicted child molester — caught after seven years on the run — was denied bond in Douglas County Friday.

Investigators said 53-year-old Larry Whitley assumed a new identity in Knoxville, Tennessee where he was working as a youth pastor.

Authorities said Whitley had been living in Knoxville under the alias of Robert Moon.

Whitley fled from Douglasville, Georgia to avoid prosecution for probation violation, sex offense against a child and child molestation.

Knox County Detective Jim Albanese and a Douglas County Deputy on the U.S. Marshalls Task Force out of Georgia found Whitley at the Wal-Mart on Walbrook where he has been working, said authorities.

As Whitley tried to run from the officers, he fell into a clothes rack and sustained some facial injuries.

Whitley was taken into custody and charged with Fugitive from Justice. He is being held without bond at the Knox County Detention Facility until Georgia authorities have him extradited back to Douglas County.

Knoxville police are looking into whether Whitley had additional victims in Tennessee.

Cobb Resident Dies From Swine Flu

I thought we were supposed to start calling it the H1N1 virus because the pork farmers were mad…this is from WSBtv.com.  Their headline calls it swine flu.  Condolences to thewoman’s family and friends.  I would be interested in knowing what those “other health conditions” the woman had.

Health officials in Georgia have confirmed the state’s H1N1 or Swine flu death.

Officials said the 43-year-old woman is from Cobb County and suffered from other health conditions when she became infected with the H1N1 virus.

“I am saddened to report the first death of a Georgia citizen associated with the novel H1N1 virus,” said DCH Commissioner and Acting Public Health Director Dr. Rhonda Medows.

To date, this illness has been seen most commonly in children and young adults with outbreaks in schools, child care centers and residential camps.

Health officials urge Georgians to protect themselves through hand washing and other prevention measures to reduce transmission of the virus.

DouglasvilleNow.com has posted a summary of the latest school board meeting…very informative!

Restaurant Scores

I just don’t have time to update the restaurant inspection page.  Instead, I’m going to list only the low and failing scores here.   69 and below is failing.  The first one is just shocking–and why can’t we find out what the infractions are??  With a score THAT low, the restaurant must have done something SERIOUSLY wrong.  The third one is almost as bad.

Bonz Sports Grill, Fairburn Road–32
Dairy Queen, Fairburn Road–67
Hunan Chinese Restaurant, Fairburn Road–38
Hudson’s Hickory House–68
Quaker Steak & Lube–70 (Note: This is a passing score, but if it had been a 69, it would have been failing)
Tony’s Mexican Grill–78

Trucker Nearly Killed By Cable

From WSBradio.com:

The Georgia Department of Transportation has stopped all work on the Highway 92 Overpass near I-20 in Douglasville, after a man is nearly killed by a swinging cable.

Veteran truck driver Herman Griggs tells Channel 2 Action News he was on his routine route to Kennesaw, going under the Highway 92 Overpass, when he noticed a cable dangling in the air.

“I saw what I thought was a power cable in front of me dancing.  The truck in front of me made it.  I was braking pretty hard, and all of a sudden the windshield just exploded in my face,” said Griggs.

He says had the cable hit a few inches closer, he would probably have been killed.

“I’ll be just thanking the Lord that I’m all right,” said Griggs.

Industrial Painting, Inc. had been painting the Overpass.  The D-O-T thinks the cable became entangled in the cable.  Work won’t resume until the investigation is complete.

Nioxin Lithia Springs Closing

112 people will lose their jobs next year when Nioxin Research Labs closes in Lithia Springs.  The plant will be closed to further consolidate their other two plants in California and Mexico.  Only 25% of the employees will be allowed to move to other locations.  The rest will receive separation support and benefits.  Basically, I think,  they’re moving away from Georgia because it costs them too much to move items back and forth across the country.  The Douglasville Development Authority posted the following comment on their Facebook page about three hours ago:

“The closing of Nioxin Research Labs in Lithia Springs (inside Douglasville city limits) is a huge loss for its employees and the City. The Douglasville Development Authority has been aggressivelyworking the last several days to 1) Identify all local, state and federal programs that can assist the displaced workers, 2) Determine if P&G’s decision can be reversed and 3) Locate another business in the Nioxin space.”

Procter & Gamble purchased NioxinResearch Labs last September.
