SPLOST Results By Precinct

A HUGE thanks to Richard Segal for emailing these to me.  It’s too long to put in a blog post, so I’ve created a page–you can find it in the bar above where it says “Douglas County News”.

Some analysis:

Ten out of 25 precincts voted in favor of the SPLOST.  Just ten.  The list: Ephesus, Bill Arp, Winston (with a 12 vote difference), Boundary Waters (a ten vote difference), First Baptist, St. Julian’s, Chestnut Log, Dorsett Shoals, Bright Star, and Arbor Station.  But those ten made up the yes votes, certainly.  In the heart of the city, at the Old Courthouse, 106 more people voted for the SPLOST than against it.  And at First Baptist, also in the city, I think, 61 more voted for it than against it.  At Bill Arp, 58 more voted for it.

I’ve also asked Mr. Segal for the TAD results by precinct–I am curious to see where those 230 missing votes for the TAD came from.

SPLOST APPROVED

By 32 votes. Kind of…odd that it was so close.  At least the TADs for the city and the county failed to pass.

Open House On Saturday With Congressman David Scott

The press release issued by the city of Douglasville specifically mentions this is to talk about Hwy 92.  Nowhere in the press release does it mention other questions will be accepted.  I guess we’ll see what happens.  This should be broadcast live on the city’s tv channel, but most likely if anything happens, someone starts talking about healthcare, it’ll be another two weeks before they release the video.

Keep Douglas Safe Flier

Someone posted a comment about the flier–here’s what it says (I got one today as well):

On the front there is a photo of a man’s hands holding the bars of a jail cell.  Then this text:

PROTECT YOUR HOME VALUE-

PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY TAX RATE

How?

Vote ‘Yes’ on the SPLOST!

Douglas County needs a new jail!

-To prevent court-ordered release of criminals

-To save tax dollars

-To keep our County Safe

VOTE ‘YES’ TO KEEP DOUGLAS SAFE

AND TO AVOID A PROPERTY TAX HIKE!

Lower Taxes, Less Crime = HIGHER Home values!

Protect your home Value–Vote YES!

Vote to approve the Public Safety SPLOST

NOVEMBER 3, 2009

www.KeepDouglasSafe.com (which, btw, is still not up and running)

On the back it has a photo of a man holding what looks like law books (very thick books) and next to it it says, “This federal judge can order the early release of prisoners, or require ankle bracelets and ‘home arrest!’ To the right of this is the same picture of the hands on the cell bars and the text reads: “This violent criminal hopes he does!”

Underneath this it says in large capital letters, “PROTECT YOUR HOME VALUE!  PROTECT DOUGLAS COUNTY! Vote ‘YES’ on the Public Safety SPLOST  EARLY VOTE OCT 26-30  ELECTION DAY: NOVEMBER 3.

Going to search Google for the “Committee to Keep Douglas Safe” who paid for this ad.  No results.  Well, we know the website is run by a consulting firm–I found this out earlier (it should be on the second or third page of this blog).  Perhaps this committee and the consulting firm are one and the same?  According to DNS information, the website was last updated on September 8–the date it was registered.  Possibly whomever created it didn’t want to build the website?  I think I’m going to email Landmark Communications (based out of Duluth) and get some answers.  Wait–you can’t email them.  How convenient.  One of the employees has a blog that hasn’t been updated since January.  But…he has a Twitter account–so I’ll contact him from there.

Failing Restaurant Inspection Scores

I was kind of shocked about the first one.

El Rodeo, Hwy 5:   58

Kenny’s Home Cooking:  57

KeepDouglasSafe.com

In this month’s Chapel Hill News and Views there is an ad encouraging citizens to vote yes on the SPLOST to keep the county safe.  They direct people to http://www.keepdouglassafe.com.  The website was registered on September 8.  However…there’s nothing on the website.  I find it kind of odd that, being the vote is a month away, there is nothing there.  I searched for the owner of the website and it is Landmark Communications, a consulting firm that does PR work for several types of elections…including SPLOST referendums.  So the question is…who hired them?

Cookbook–Recipes NEEDED!

I thought this was so nice.  Got this in an email:

Hi – My name is Sara McMichael.  I would like to put together a cookbook for my friend Ty Weathers, who lost his wife Delena, in the floods Monday.  He has 2 small children that he is going to have to learn how to cook for!  I was wondering if you could post something on your site regarding this?  I would like to try to get as many kid-friendly, EASY recipes as possible.  These can be main dishes, sides, desserts or whatever!

Thanx – Sara
