A Muslim woman who was jailed for contempt of court after refusing to take off her head scarf at a security checkpoint has been freed after one day.

A judge in Douglasville, Georgia, an Atlanta suburb, yesterday ordered Lisa Valentine to serve 10 days in jail.

Police say court policy prohibits people from wearing headgear in court.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations urged federal authorities to investigate.

Valentine tells The Associated Press today she was unexpectedly released once the council got involved. She says she felt “stripped” of her “human rights.”

Valentine’s husband says his wife was accompanying her nephew to a traffic citation hearing.

He says Valentine told the bailiff that removing the scarf would be a religious violation. He says when she turned to leave and uttered an expletive, she was arrested.
