This will be the fifth store in Douglasville to close (or about to close).  Liquidation will start tomorrow.  So far KB Toys, Wilson Leather, Circuit City, and the Broyhill store (where MediaPlay used to be) has or will close.  I think all but Broyhill have closed.  Disney Store might also close as they will be closing about 100 stores.  New York & Company announced this morning they are closing 50 stores.  Dillard’s will be closing eight stores this year (that we know of–they closed 21 stores in 2008).  If anyone knows of another store that will be closing and can point me to a newspaper article online that confirms it, I’ll add it to the list.

From the Birmingham Business Journal:

Discount clothing retailer Goody’s Family Clothing is set to liquidate its remaining stores, only months after emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Cathy Hershcopf, a partner at Cooley Godward Kronish LLP, the California law firm that represented Goody’s unsecured creditors in its June bankruptcy reorganization, told the BBJ’s sister paper, the Columbus Business First, on Wednesday the chain will begin liquidating its shops soon. Goody’s has 287 stores – 30 in Alabama and three in the Birmingham area.

Gary Yiatchos, a spokesman for the Knoxville, Tenn.-based discounter, wouldn’t confirm the liquidation and declined to comment further.

The retailer employs 9,800 workers.

Goody’s plans for liquidation come after it emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October and closed 69 underperforming stores, including five in Ohio. The company in October said that during its reorganization, it cut operating costs, shut a distribution center and New York corporate office and pulled the plug on its e-commerce business. The company sought protection under Chapter 11 as a response to credit and merchandise problems.

Hershcopf said the reason behind the company’s latest move is simple: “The economy’s awful.”

Goody’s, which had about $1 billion in revenue last year, runs stores mainly in the Southeast and Midwest. The privately held company is owned by PGDYS Lending LLC.
