A Wednesday morning fire and explosion at a Douglasville asphalt processing plant resulted in minor burns to two employees.

The accident occurred about 11 a.m. at Asphalt Refining and Technology Company (ARTC), 7982 Huey Road, when a flash fire and explosion in an asphalt tank injured two employees working nearby, according to Michael Hudson, ARTC vice-president.

“The employees suffered minor burns,” Hudson said. “One was taken to WellStar Douglas Hospital and was treated and released. The other employee suffered a burn on his wrist and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.”

Hudson said the facility remained in operation Wednesday and only the one tank was damaged. He said the vertical tank had been emptied before the explosion.

“We’re still doing internal investigations,” he said.

Douglas County Fire Stations 7 and 11 responded to the fire, sending two engines and two rescue units, according to Wes Tallon, county communications and community relations director.

“The small fire was quickly brought under control in less than 25 minutes,” Tallon said.

ARTC has been in operation since 2005 and makes different grades of asphalt for paving and roofing applications, according to Hudson.
