Man Killed By Train

A man was hit and killed by a west bound train Thursday on the tracks that run parallel to Highway 78, just east of the Highway 92 crossing.

He was struck shortly after 11 a.m. directly across from the First Choice Bank near downtown Douglasville, according to Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack.

Two separate witnesses said the man just stepped out in front of the train, Womack said.

His identification was not released pending notification of relatives, but Coroner Randy Daniel said the victim would have turned 31 on Oct. 17.

According to Daniel, the young man was jogging with his headphones on when he was struck. The impact knocked him clear of the tracks.

Womack said it was not known if the man was wearing headphones at the time but said a set was found on his person.

“It’s a terrible tragedy, any way you look at it,” he said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:50 a.m.

Daniel said the cause of death was head trauma.

“We don’t know if he saw the train or heard it or whether he jumped in front of it,” Daniel said.
